FAQs
I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?
What’s the difference between talking to a therapist instead of my best friend or family?
A mental health professional has specialized training and experience to help navigate difficult situations effectively. Our therapists provide a nonjudgmental, confidential space to explore emotions, gain new perspectives, and learn skills to manage challenges. Unlike personal relationships, therapy ensures a safe, professional environment where support is unbiased and focused solely on the your well-being.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
While medication can be effective for managing certain symptoms, it may not address underlying issues on its own. Combining counseling with medication allows for deeper exploration of challenges and the development of lasting skills and strengths.
How do outpatient therapy services work? What do I have to do in sessions?
Therapy is a highly personalized process designed to address the unique needs of each individual. During sessions, the therapist works collaboratively with the client to identify goals and develop a plan to achieve them. The specific approach used will depend on the challenges being faced, personal preferences, and what feels most effective for you. Sessions may involve discussing thoughts, emotions, and experiences, learning new coping strategies, or practicing skills to manage difficult situations. Clients are encouraged to actively participate by being open, honest, and engaged, as this helps create a productive and supportive environment for growth and change.
How long will I be in counseling?
The length of counseling varies depending on individual circumstances. Factors such as personal goals, commitment to the process, and the issues prompting someone to seek therapy all influence the duration needed to achieve desired outcomes.
I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
Active participation and commitment are essential for making progress in therapy. Therapy appointments reoccur at the same time weekly, and it is important for you to be able to attend each session. You are expected to attend at least 3 sessions per month, unless otherwise agreed upon with your therapist. Engaging openly in sessions and practicing skills or strategies outside of therapy will also contribute to your success.
